The Davidson College Traditional Series returns this year with two important changes. The series will be held in the fall semester, between September and November. Also, in response to selling out almost all of our concerts in Tyler-Tallman Hall for several years, the series will move this year to the Duke Family Performance Hall. Two of our guests – The Cockman Family and The Kruger Brothers – are being rescheduled from their lost concert of the spring of 2020. They will be joined by Elizabeth LaPrelle, a celebrated Virginia banjoist and ballad singer, and Bob Carlin, a major banjo historian and performer.
Upcoming shows include:
- February 23 – Breabach, 7:30 pm, $5.00 – $21.00. Brebach is a fascinating new generation Celtic band from Scotland. The great highlight of the quintet is the use of two bagpipers who double on flute, working beside fiddle and guitar. The resulting sound is highly rhythmic and energetic, and totally unique.
- April 25 – Phil Wiggins and the Chesapeake Sheiks, $7:30pm, $5.00 – $21.00. Phil Wiggins, broadly acknowledged as the greatest blues harmonica player of our time, is the second of our NEA Folk Heritage Fellows to perform on this series. He performed for decades with the late John Cephas in the duo Cephas and Wiggins. Since the death of John Cephas, Mr. Wiggins has created a variety of ensembles to continue the tradition. We have the honor to present him with his largest ensemble, the Chesapeake Sheiks. In addition to playing Piedmont Blues, they also perform a lot of early jazz, including the music of Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington. They make a great evening of music and dance!
