Old-time singer and banjo player, storyteller, traditional gardener
Mary Jane Queen lived in the Caney Fork section of Jackson County. Through her reservoir of traditional knowledge, her gardens, and her songs and stories, she communicated the values and traditions of her upbringing to modern audiences.
Old-time banjo player and singer, folklorist, (1882-1973)
Musician, folklorist, and festival organizer Bascom Lamar Lunsford was born in Madison County. His father was a Confederate veteran from East Tennessee, and his mother came from a Unionist family from Buncombe and Madison Counties. His mother was a ballad singer, and her family included fiddlers and other musicians.
We had such a great time talking with Marc Pruett about his musical career that we found ourselves with a longer story. In this second episode, we look back at some of his early influences, the well-loved Bill Stanley’s BBQ, and the birth of Balsam Range.
Marc Pruett is known for his spectacular three-finger banjo playing and his winning smile! He’s also one of the founding members of the bluegrass band Balsam Range. Marc sat down to share some stories, discussing his life in Haywood County and his musical career, which has taken him to different areas of the world.
Jimmy Carter wasn't just a politician but also a lifelong music lover. His passion for music extended far beyond his presidency, enriching his life and connecting him to artists and audiences nationwide.
Jazz Nights: During his presidency, Carter hosted a series of White House Jazz Festivals, showcasing the talents of musicians like Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald, and Benny Goodman. These events brought jazz to the forefront of American culture and introduced the genre to a new generation.
A Friend to Country Music: Carter developed close friendships with many country music stars, including Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash. He often attended country music concerts.
Supporting Emerging Talent: He actively supported emerging artists and bands, recognizing the importance of nurturing young talent and fostering a vibrant music scene.
Today, we remember Jimmy Carter for his love of music and dedication to supporting artists of all genres. His legacy extends beyond politics, reminding us of the power of music to connect, inspire, and enrich our lives.
